  9. About Mac On The Go
  10.  
  11. Welcome to Mac On The Go! Mac On The Go is a Mac OS application that connects a Mac OS computer to an HP OmniGo 100/120 Organizer Plus.

Hidden underneath the OmniGoﾕs GUI (Graphical User Interface) is a DOS-like file system that manages files containing the information youﾕve entered in your OmniGo, including your phone numbers, appointments, and notes. Mac On The Go gives you access to that file system with the help of the OmniGoﾕs Transfer application.

  16. What You Need

  18. To use this software, youﾕll need:
  19.  
  20. ･ A Mac OS computer running System 7.1 or greater, Color QuickDraw, at least 2 MB of free RAM, at least 1 MB of free hard disk space. Mac On The Go is a ﾒfatﾓ application; it runs native on Macintosh and other Mac OS computers with Motorola 68030, Motorola 68040, and PowerPC processors.

  22. ･ A Hewlett-Packard OmniGo 100 or OmniGo 120 Organizer Plus.

  24. ･ A serial cable connecting the Mac OS computer to the OmniGo. The cable may be plugged into the Mac's modem or printer port. Order the proper cable directly from HP or from the company that sold you your OmniGo or Mac OS machine.

  27. Getting Started

  29. Getting started using Mac On The Go is easy:

  31. 1. Connect your Mac OS computer to your OmniGo through a serial cable. Note which port on your Mac OS machine the cable is plugged into, modem or printer.

  33. TIP: The modem port is recommended because itﾕs the Mac On The Go default.
  34.  
  35. 2. On the Mac OS computer, launch the Mac On The Go application.
  36.  
  37. 3. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
  38.  
  39. 4. Set the desired connection port and speed.
  40.  
  41. 5. Click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.
  42.  
  43. TIP: Donﾕt bother changing preferences if the OmniGo is already set for 9600 baud and is connected to your Mac OS computer through the modem port.

  45. 6. Turn on your OmniGo.
  46.  
  47. 7. On the OmniGo, tap the Home icon on the side of the display, then tap the Transfer icon on the display.

  49. 8. Tap PC at the bottom of the display. A dialog box appears, titled ﾒPC Connect.ﾓ

  51. 9. Tap Serial.

  53. 10. Choose the speed at which you want to connect: 2400, 9600, or 19200 baud. Make sure itﾕs the same speed that you chose in the Mac On The Go preferences.

  55. TIP: The 9600 baud rate is recommended because itﾕs the Mac On The Go default.

  57. 11. Tap OK if youﾕve made a choice, or tap Cancel if you havenﾕt changed the baud rate.

  59. NOTE: you only have to set the baud rate once, or whenever you change the way you use Mac On The Go. The OmniGo will remember the setting everytime you connect.

  61. 12. Tap Connect. Wait for a dialog box to appear titled ﾒConnected to PC.ﾓ

  63. 13. Choose New Connection from the File menu. A window will appear listing the available drives on the OmniGo.

  65. TIP: Use commands in the File and Connection menus to manipulate and transfer files.

  67. TIP: Choose Show Balloons from the Help menu to see balloon help for menu items.

  69. TIP: If you have Apple Guide installed on your computer, choose Mac On The Go Guide from the Help menu to get on-line help.

  72. Known Limitations
  73.  
  74. Mac On The Goﾕs bugs and limitations that Iﾕm aware of in no particular order:

  76. ･ This software has so far only been used on a Power Macintosh 7100/66 running System 7.5.5 and connected to an OmniGo 100 with and without a 1 MB static RAM PC card installed.

  78. ･ Transferring large files at 19,200 baud isnﾕt always reliable. If a large file wonﾕt transfer at 19200, try re-connecting at 9600 baud.

  80. ･ Preferences arenﾕt remembered. If you connect to your OmniGo differently than the default preferences, youﾕll have to set them every time you use Mac On The Go.

  82. ･ The progress dialog boxes for file transfers donﾕt always react to mouse clicks.
  83.  
  84. ･ Error reporting is lacking. At the moment, Mac On The Go only reports that an error occurs and doesnﾕt clearly explain the nature of the error.

  86. ･ Drag and Drop isnﾕt supported yet. Hang onﾑIﾔm still learning!

  88. ･ AppleScript support is abysmal right now. Eventually, Iﾕd like to add much better scripting features, making it possible to automate tasks like backing up the OmniGo.

  90. ･ Mac On The Go doesnﾕt support ﾒ.GPKﾓ files. ﾒ.GPKﾓ files are special archives in which OmniGo software is often shipped. ﾒ.GPKﾓ files contain embedded OmniGo files and file location information. Unlike PCCOM, information on ﾒ.GPKﾓ files is difficult to find, so such a feature could take a while to support.
